“Winter Illness, Summer Treatment.” Say what?!?!
<!--paging_filter--><p><img alt="" align="left" width="250" height="228" style="margin-right: 15px" src="/upload/articlewist.jpg" />Have you ever noticed that some illnesses are seasonal? It is indeed true that certain illnesses tend to flare in one season or another, primarily as a result of climatic factors such as temperature, humidity, etc. In Chinese Medicine (CM) we like to use these seasonal fluctuations to our advantage, and one way we do this is to treat &ldquo;winter illnesses&rdquo; (illnesses that worsen in the cold winter months) during the summer. This is called, &ldquo;Winter Illness, Summer Treatment&rdquo;, or 冬病夏治 in Chinese.</p> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-article-author"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Author:&nbsp;</div> Yours in Health, Dr. Greg A. Miss U.S.A. visits Shanghai United Family Hospital, promotes breast health
<!--paging_filter--><p><img width="250" height="250" align="left" style="margin-right: 15px;" src="/upload/articlehemujia.jpg" alt="" />Miss U.S.A., Rema Fikah visited Shanghai United Family Hospital (SHU) to educate the Shanghai community about early screening and detection of breast cancer. The recent winner of the Miss U.S.A. title is passionate about promoting breast cancer awareness internationally and was pleased to learn of the hospital&rsquo;s international standard facilities in the area of breast health for Shanghai residents.</p> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-article-author"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Author:&nbsp;</div> Unknown </div> </div> </div> <div class="og_rss_groups"></div>
The Broke Diner: 30 RMB for 48 Hours
<!--paging_filter--><p><img width="200" height="150" align="left" alt="" src="/upload/La-Rou-Bao.jpg" style="margin-right: 15px;" />So I&rsquo;m back in Shanghai and just spent the last few days desperately searching for a new abode. The good news is that I found one. The bad news is that I&rsquo;m now paying out the nose for a tiny (if almost overwhelmingly cute in my opinion) apartment and that the 1-month deposit + 3-month rent + agent fee policy left me rather broke. After exhausting my Chinese account on rent, my American bank&rsquo;s policy not to allow more than $500 in ATM withdrawals in a 24-hour period meant I had no cash on hand. I had to borrow 300 RMB from Nell to finish paying the agent fee, then had 30 RMB left for&hellip;.the next 24 hours.</p> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-article-author"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Author:&nbsp;</div> shau-ru </div> </div> </div> <div class="og_rss_groups"></div>

Getting an Ayi (maid) is Easy!
<!--paging_filter--><p><style type="text/css"> li.a{ list-style-type:disc; margin-left:25px;} </style></p> <p><img src="/upload/68l13a.jpg" style="margin-right:15px; padding:2px; border:1px solid gray;" align="left">You can get good help these days.</p> <p>Newbies, you will quickly realize that most anyone with a little expendable income indulges in the accessibility of maid services in China. It’s really nice not having to do your dishes or coming home from a hard day at work to a clean apartment. Depending on responsibilities, a maid or AYI (loosely translated as “auntie”) will cost about 20 RMB an hour for regular cleaning work. Some families hire ayis on a full-time basis for cooking and help with raising children. It’s also a great way for your little ones to be exposed to Mandarin. There are essentially two ways to get an ayi: independently through reference OR via agency. </p> <p>If you need further consulting, check out our forums or visit an agency.</p> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-article-author"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Author:&nbsp;</div> carolbbie and Dennis Ming Nichols </div> </div> </div> <div class="og_rss_groups"></div>

My logo is bigger than your logo! The culture of Chinese consumerism.

When considering its per capita income of USD 2000 (I'm rounding up here), and the fact that luxury goods are no cheaper in China then elsewhere (not counting counterfeits of course) it's culturally interesting to probe the reasons why Chinese spend such a large percentage of their income on luxury. Is it a status thing? Is it an appreciation of &quot;the finer things&quot;?</p> <p>Well its actually a mixture of both, but the recipe in China calls for a different ratio of ingredients compared to the West. Also, cultural factors and Chinese history play a major role in the motivations of today's consumers. The World Luxury Association predicts China's demand for products will increase from 86 billion to 136 billion by 2010&hellip; crazy right? I'll attempt to show the logic behind this statistic (wish me luck).</p> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-article-author"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Author:&nbsp;</div> Red littel book </div> </div> </div> <div class="og_rss_groups"></div>

Top 3 Questions to Ask Before Signing Up for an ‘Offshore Pension Plan’
<!--paging_filter--><p><style type="text/css"> li.a{ list-style:decimal; margin-left:23px; } li.b{ list-style:circle; margin-left:43px; } </style></p> <p><img src="/upload/6966a.jpg" align="left" style="padding:2px; border:1px solid gray; margin-right:15px;">Living abroad, you might have been approached about ‘special tax-advantaged investments available only to expatriates’. These are commonly products and services based in a low-tax or tax-free jurisdiction. Offshore financial services can make sense for some expatriates, for example with standard banking and brokerage accounts offered by global banking and brokerage companies.<br /> This article focuses on one type of product - offshore savings/pension plans, known within the industry as investment-linked life insurance. These products are promoted as a way to help expatriates save for goals such as retirement. The idea is that you invest regularly into a tax-advantaged, offshore investment that helps you grow your savings for the future.<br /> Typically locking investors into terms as long as 20 to 30 years, and charging a list of annual fees, these products are very profitable for insurance companies. To encourage their sale, insurance companies offer hefty commissions to ‘independent financial advisors’ – based on how long and how much their clients sign up for. </p> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-article-author"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Author:&nbsp;</div> Anthony Noto </div> </div> </div> <div class="og_rss_groups"></div>
Which international school is best for your child?
<!--paging_filter--><p><img align="left" alt="" src="/upload/classroom-kids.jpg" style="border: 1px solid gray; margin-right: 15px;" />If you are moving your family to Shanghai, you will need to find a way to send your children to school. Luckily, Shanghai has a wide range. Costs vary -- some are very expensive compared to what you may be used to in your home country. I also know of several expats who are doing home-schooling or use the local Chinese school system. These alternative options are detailed at the end of this article. But first, here is a bit of information on international-style (read private) schools:</p> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-article-author"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Author:&nbsp;</div> edited by Dennis Ming Nichols </div> </div> </div> <div class="og_rss_groups"></div>

The Ultimate Guide to Cheap Chinese Beer
<!--paging_filter--><p><img align="left" style="margin-right: 15px; border: 1px solid gray; padding: 2px;" src="http://www.shanghaiexpat.com/upload/6773a.jpg" alt="" />SHX answers the question that matters most: Which convenience store beer is the best?</p> <p>In Shanghai, there are means of getting delicious imported and domestic craft beers, but sometimes all you need is a cold, cheap Chinese lager to get your night started. The first bar I hit on a Friday (or Wednesday) night is AllDays where the Reeb is always cold and the smiling cashier-ladies are dressed to impress. And no night out would be complete without an appearance at the new hip French bar &ldquo;Le Outside of Lawson.&rdquo; Your local dirty restaurant (家常菜) carries Suntory in lieu of Stella and we expats have to accept that. Not all beers are created equal, and though cheap Chinese alcohol-water does not match its foreign or microbrewed cousins, you&rsquo;d be surprised how many convenient store beers are actually...tolerable!</p> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-article-author"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Author:&nbsp;</div> Dennis Ming Nichols </div> </div> </div> <div class="og_rss_groups"></div>

How Can I Learn Mandarin?
<!--paging_filter--><p><img align="left" style="border: 1px solid gray; margin-right: 15px;" src="/upload/mandrinarticle1.jpg" alt="" />The last ten years have brought online education from relative obscurity to some level of legitimacy. Though I am pretty skeptical of online degrees in Neuroscience, I do think learning Mandarin through online methods is very possible. However, a lot of people would rather go the traditional classroom route. If you live in Shanghai, multiple methods are available to you in any combination.<br /> &nbsp;</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-article-author"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Author:&nbsp;</div> Dennis Ming Nichols </div> </div> </div> <div class="og_rss_groups"></div>

Real Estate Woes: Company Assigned Agents
<!--paging_filter--><p><img align="left" alt="" src="/upload/article7.jpg" style="border: 1px solid gray; margin-right: 15px; width: 200px; height: 150px;" />Whilst it&rsquo;s common for corporations and companies to have agreements with a few agencies to keep consistency and cut costs, if you find yours isn&rsquo;t up to scratch, ask first if you can change to another agent within the agency or see if your company deals with anyone else. Most MNCs or SMEs will have two or three agencies they have agreements with and some will allow their employees to choose their own agent.</p> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-article-author"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Author:&nbsp;</div> Adrienne Farrelly </div> </div> </div> <div class="og_rss_groups"></div>
